Hon. Lady Justice Hellen Omondi

Hon. Lady Justice Hellen Omondi is a highly respected and senior judicial officer serving on the Court of Appeal of Kenya, one of the nation’s most esteemed appellate courts. She brings to the bench more than three decades of judicial and legal experience, marked by profound integrity, deep jurisprudential insight, and a steadfast commitment to justice and the rule of law.

Justice Omondi’s legal journey began with her admission to the Roll of Advocates in 1985, after which she entered judicial service as District Magistrate II. Over the course of 22 years as a magistrate, she demonstrated exceptional judicial leadership, progressing to the rank of Chief Magistrate in 2003 before her elevation to the High Court of Kenya in 2007. Her appointment to the Court of Appeal reflects her distinguished record of legal reasoning, impartial adjudication, and fidelity to constitutional principles.

Academically, Justice Omondi holds a Master’s Degree in Women’s Laws from the University of Zimbabwe, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Nairobi, and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She also earned a Certificate in Graduate Study and Professional Development from the University of Minnesota, underscoring her commitment to continuous professional excellence.

Justice Omondi’s leadership extends beyond the courtroom. She currently serves as President of the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) – Kenya Chapter, a prominent judicial association dedicated to promoting gender justice, human rights, and mentorship within the judiciary and the wider legal profession. Under her stewardship, the IAWJ Kenya Chapter has championed expanded access to justice, strengthened judicial awareness of gender and child rights issues, and fostered capacity building for judges and legal professionals across the region.

Her judicial work has consistently reflected a deep engagement with issues of equity, fairness, and social justice. Through public engagements — including leading activities during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender‑Based Violence — she has actively supported community empowerment and legal awareness efforts that uphold human rights and protect vulnerable populations.

As a Judge for the Green Law Global Initiative (GLGI) Moot Court Competition, Justice Omondi brings a rare combination of appellate experience, mentorship ethos, and principled legal scholarship. Her participation enriches the competition’s academic rigor, strengthens its adjudicative integrity, and provides young advocates with an extraordinary opportunity to be guided by one of Africa’s most accomplished jurists. Her leadership resonates deeply with GLGI’s mission to cultivate high‑calibre climate justice advocates, advance environmental governance discourse, and inspire the next generation of legal minds committed to serving the public good.
