Justice Matthew John Anyara Emukule

Justice Matthew John Anyara Emukule is a distinguished retired jurist and Senior Advocate of the High Court of Kenya whose long and impactful judicial career has left a lasting mark on the Kenyan legal landscape. He retired from active service on the bench with honour after decades of service, earning deep respect for his judicial independence and principled approach to justice.

During his tenure on the High Court, Justice Emukule presided over a range of significant cases, including environmental and public law matters such as Peter K. Waweru v Republic — a case that engaged constitutional and environmental principles such as sustainable development, the precautionary approach, and intergenerational equity. In that judgment, the bench underscored environmental protection and procedural fairness, applying internationally recognised environmental law concepts grounded in Kenya’s legal framework.

Beyond his judicial service, Justice Emukule has continued to champion environmental justice and climate accountability. He currently serves as the Presiding Judge for the GLGI International Moot Court Competitions, where he provides mentorship, guidance, and inspiration to emerging climate and environmental law advocates across Africa. His ongoing engagement reflects a deep commitment to nurturing principled legal leadership and strengthening the rule of law in environmental governance.
