Nakuru lawyer quits job to plant trees on Menengai Forest

From Courtrooms to Canopies: The Inspiring Journey of Brian Awuonda in Menengai Forest

In 2018, Brian Awuonda, a 31-year-old lawyer from Nakuru and a graduate of Kabarak University, made a life-altering decision to leave his legal profession and dedicate himself to environmental conservation. Motivated by the teachings of Nobel laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, Awuonda embarked on a mission to restore the degraded Menengai Forest in Nakuru County.

Embracing a Greener Path

Awuonda’s transition from law to environmental activism was driven by a desire for meaningful impact. He expressed that the monotony and pressure of his legal career left him unfulfilled, stating, “The pressure in a career that you don’t love can leave you burnt out. I’m happier because I am doing a job I love.”

Founding House of Plenty International

To actualize his conservation goals, Awuonda established House of Plenty International (HoPI), an initiative that mobilizes street families and schoolchildren for tree-planting activities in Menengai Forest. Through HoPI, he has constructed an arboretum aimed at rehabilitating street children and providing a space for community engagement.

Overcoming Personal and Social Challenges

Awuonda’s unconventional career choice was met with skepticism and personal sacrifices. He recounted instances where his commitment to conservation led to strained relationships, including the end of a romantic relationship and concerns from his family. Despite these challenges, he remained steadfast, noting that his family and peers eventually recognized the value of his work and began supporting his initiatives.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Awuonda’s efforts have resonated with the youth, fostering environmental consciousness among students. Grade Seven pupil Aisha Galgalo from Eagle Mount Academy shared her experience: “It was all about sharing love. I have learnt all the children whether they are in the street or are privileged to be in school like us, we can all make a difference and be good ambassadors by conserving the environment.”

Brian Awuonda’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of individual commitment to environmental stewardship. His transition from a legal career to grassroots conservation work serves as an inspiration for those seeking to align their professions with their passions for societal and environmental betterment.
