Brian Awuonda is a distinguished environmental lawyer, strategist, and visionary advocate for climate justice in Africa. A top-performing law graduate of Kabarak University, Brian earned the highest marks in the oral exams at the Kenya School of Law, signaling early his excellence in legal reasoning and advocacy.
He began his legal career as a Trainee Advocate at Kaplan & Stratton Advocates, and later served as Associate Partner in charge of litigation at a prominent law firm founded by former Chief Justice David Maraga. On 4th July 2017, driven by a bold vision for transformative legal impact, Brian founded BBA Advocates, now a tier-one legal practice and a national leader in climate litigation.
He is the Founding CEO of the Green Law Africa Initiative, a fast-growing platform that uses strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and education to advance environmental governance across Africa. Under his leadership, the Initiative has spearheaded groundbreaking events such as the Africa Climate Legal Alliance Moot Court Competitions and the Green Law Africa Climate Justice Moot, which have empowered law students across the continent.
A proud YALI RLC EA alumnus (Cohort 39) and cohort leader, Brian is also the Founder of the Make Kenya Green Campaign, the Client Mother Earth Project, and a Director at House of Plenty International, a new frontier initiative championing children’s rights, environmental sustainability, and tree planting. He holds a Master of Arts in Environmental Law from the University of Nairobi, and continues to shape legal responses to the climate crisis through research, litigation, and public engagement.
