BRIAN A. LAW SCHOOL (BALS)

Brian A. Law School (BALS) is a hybrid legal literacy and justice empowerment institution dedicated to democratizing legal knowledge across Africa. It operates at the intersection of professional legal formation and public legal literacy, equipping both aspiring lawyers and ordinary citizens with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding necessary to advance justice, civic responsibility, and sustainable development.

BALS bridges the gap between legal theory and practical application while simultaneously translating complex legal principles into accessible, actionable knowledge for communities.

It exists to ensure that law is not confined to courtrooms and classrooms — but understood, lived, and applied within society.

Founder, Brian A. Law School

Brian Awuonda is the founder of Brian A. Law School (BALS), a justice-centered institution committed to reshaping how law is understood, practiced, and lived across Africa. BALS exists to democratize legal knowledge by delivering accessible public legal literacy programs alongside rigorous, practical training for lawyers, thereby strengthening civic responsibility, access to justice, and transformative advocacy. Its vision is to become Africa’s leading legal literacy and justice formation institution — the trusted go-to platform for legal understanding, professional excellence, and civic empowerment. BALS is the place where citizens go to understand their rights, the platform where young lawyers are shaped into ethical and courageous advocates, and a growing continental authority in accessible legal education influencing civic culture across Africa.

At its core, BALS exists to make law understandable to ordinary citizens, equip lawyers with practical, ethical, and socially responsive skills, and bridge the divide between communities and the legal profession. In its public legal literacy mandate, BALS simplifies and disseminates legal knowledge in clear, accessible language, empowering citizens with practical understanding of land and property rights, employment and labour rights, family law and succession, contracts and small business law, environmental and climate justice, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Through this work, BALS seeks to cultivate a culture of civic responsibility and lawful engagement, reduce vulnerability caused by ignorance of legal rights and procedures, and build national and continental recognition as a trusted legal literacy platform.

Simultaneously, BALS advances professional legal formation by providing practical, skills-based training that bridges theory and practice, mentoring ethical and socially responsive lawyers, and developing specialization tracks in climate and environmental justice, human rights law, and public interest litigation. Through structured mentorship, moot courts, legal clinics, and certificate programs, it nurtures advocates who see law as service, not merely profession. Institutionally, BALS operates on a sustainable hybrid funding model in which paid professional programs support public legal literacy initiatives, while building a strong digital legal education ecosystem through its YouTube channel and website.

Through partnerships with universities, churches, community groups, NGOs, and professional associations — alongside documenting impact and publishing simplified legal resources — BALS is steadily evolving into a continental justice authority for the next decade and beyond.
